Julie Johnson is a defender of justice and fights for those among us who need it most. Julie made history in 2024 when she was elected the first openly LGBTQ person from Texas and from the South ever elected to federal office.
Julie comes to Washington from the Texas House of Representatives where she served three terms since 2018.
As a legislator, Julie Johnson has earned a reputation for going toe to toe with the crooked and powerful. Last session, she helped kill 76 of 77 anti-LGBTQ bills. She authored the historic Live Well Texas bill, which would have expanded Medicaid in Texas, gaining bipartisan support from 9 Republican Co-Sponsors, and as Vice-Chair of the Women’s Health Caucus fights on the front lines for reproductive rights.
She was named the 2019 ‘Freshman of the Year’; by Texas Monthly, ‘Champion of Medicine’ by the Texas Medical Association, and given the ‘Big Voices for Little Texans’ Award by Texas CASA.
As a Texas educated attorney (Hook’Em), Julie fought her way into the courtroom during a time when women weren’t being hired to litigate cases. She has defended workers, stood up for the mentally disabled, helped students who were taken advantage of by for-profit universities, and fought for equality for female athletes.
“I’m proud to have the Christopher Street Project’s endorsement—a group singularly dedicated to building political power for transgender people and electing true trans‑champions to Congress. As they boldly put it: ‘Cowards have no place in Congress.’ I stand with them in demanding a government that respects trans dignity, protects our rights, and finally delivers the equity we deserve.”
