Equal Protection is not merely a legal clause buried in our Constitution — it is the very soul of what it means to live in a free society. When a hostile government feels empowered to crush the rights of any group among us, it has declared open season on all of us. Make no mistake: the boot that presses down on your neighbor’s neck will find yours next.
We cannot — we must not — reserve our outrage only for the moments when we ourselves are targeted. True courage, true solidarity, means fighting for the oppressed with the same fire and ferocity we would summon if it were our own freedom on the line. When an immoral, bigoted, and authoritarian government unleashes its cruelty, silence is not neutrality. Silence is surrender. Silence is complicity.
Freedom and liberty are not dusty abstractions debated in lecture halls. They are alive. They breathe. They pulse through the bond between every one of us — a sacred social contract that we must refuse to allow to be broken. I stand for you. Not because of who you are, but because of who we are — together.
And right now, that bond is being tested. Across this country, at every level of government, trans people are the target du jour of these fascists in the Trump administration (and conservatism more broadly) – They are under relentless assault — their rights stripped away, their very identities questioned, diminished, and erased. This is a moral emergency, and it demands moral leadership.
